Omaha-area schools, businesses close, change schedules Friday due to winter storm
CONDITIONS. AND CONDITIONS REALLY WON’T IMPROVE TOO MUCH AFTER THAT WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT ALL DAY FOR MOST OF THE AREA, INCLUDING THE OMAHA METRO. YOU SEE THE BLIZZARD WARNING THERE IN ORANGE CARROLL ATLANTIC. PARTS OF SOUTHWEST, CENTRAL, EASTERN IOWA, WHERE THE HEAVY, HEAVIER SNOW WILL PIVOT LATER THIS MORNING WITH SOME OF THE STRONGER WINDS. AND WE COULD STILL SEE SOME BRIEF BLIZZARD LIKE CONDITIONS FOR PARTS OF THE AREA THROUGH THIS MORNING, ESPECIALLY IN SOME OF THOSE OPEN SUSCEPTIBLE AREAS TO THE WIND. RURAL AREAS, GROUND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AS WE’LL SEE THAT HEAVIER SNOW CONTINUE THROUGH THE MORNING DRIVE, BLOWING SNOW WITH WIND GUSTS 30 POSSIBLY 40MPH. SO AGAIN, WHITEOUT NEAR WHITEOUT CONDITIONS IN SOME AREAS, ESPECIALLY OUTSIDE OF THE CITY, EVEN BY NOON, LIGHTER SNOW COMING DOWN, BUT STILL WITH THE WIND BLOWING SNOW A CONCERN CONTINUING INTO THE AFTERNOON EVEN AFTER THE SNOW STOPS FALLING WITH IT BEING THE LIGHTER, POWDERY DRIER SNOW IT WILL BE WHIPPING AROUND AS THOSE WIND GUSTS CONTINUE TO GUST UP TO 40MPH. SO FOR THE EVENING DRIVE, STILL EXPECT SOME PRETTY ROUGH TRAVEL CONDITIONS WITH THE BLOWING SNOW AND THOSE WIND CHILLS CONTINUE TO DIP DOWN CLOSER. 15 TO 20 BELOW ZERO, SO SO FAR WE’VE HAD READINGS 2 TO 4IN IN THE METRO AREA OUT TOWARD COLUMBUS ALREADY THIS MORNING, CLOSE TO 6 TO 7IN NOW AFTER 7 A.M. THROUGH THE EARLY AFTERNOON, WILL LIKELY TACK ON 2 TO 4IN IN MANY SPOTS. A LITTLE BIT MORE SOUTH SOUTHWEST IOWA, A LITTLE BIT LESS OUT TOWARD NORFORK IN COLUMBUS. STORM TOTALS STILL LOOKING LIKE IT WILL BE BETWEEN 7 AND 10IN HERE IN THE OMAHA METRO BY THE TIME IT’S ALL SAID AND DONE, AND WE STILL HAVE SEVERAL HOURS OF SNOW LEFT. BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT SNOW ALONG THE I-80 CORRIDOR, CENTRAL NEBRASKA THROUGH ALL OF IOWA, OUT TOWARDS CHICAGO. SO JUST ROUGH GOING ALONG THE I-80 CORRIDOR TODAY, ESPECIALLY WITH THE HEAVIER SNOW BANDS THAT HAVE BEEN LINING UP NEAR AND NORTH OF I-80 HERE IN NEBRASKA, THERE’S SUPER DOPPLER SEVEN RADAR. WE SAW THE RADAR FILLING IN LAST EVENING AND THEN HEAVIER SNOW MOVING TO THE METRO AREA AT 3:00, AND ANOTHER HEAVIER SNOW BAND MOVING INTO DOWNTOWN OMAHA RIGHT NOW. ANOTHER ONE OUT TO THE NORTH. BLAIR BENNINGTON ONE ELKHORN VALLEY WAHOO. YOU CAN SEE DOWN TOWARD GRETNA AS WELL, WHERE WE SEE THOSE DARKER BLUE AND GRAY AREAS. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING THE HEAVIEST SNOW AND LIKELY SEEING SOME OF THE WORST VISIBILITY, WHICH IT’S PRETTY BAD RIGHT NOW. LOOKING OUT FROM MEMPHIS WINDS HOSPITAL CAN’T EVEN MAKE OUT THE VILLAGE POINT SHOPPING CENTER A MILE OR TWO AWAY. SO LOW VISIBILITY REALLY SUSCEPTIBLE. THOSE OPEN AREAS WITH THAT WIND WHIPPING THE SNOW AROUND TEMPERATURE WISE WON’T REALLY MOVE A WHOLE LOT THROUGHOUT THE DAY. SINGLE DIGITS, WIND CHILL BETWEEN 10 AND 20 BELOW ZERO. THERE’S THAT NORTH WIND NEAR 30MPH IN OMAHA LINCOLN. RIGHT NOW CLOSE TO 40 IN TEKAMAH YOU CAN SEE THE VISIBILITY IN MOST SPOTS. HALF A MILE TO A MILE, AND WE’LL STAY THAT WAY FOR A CHUNK OF THE DAY AS THOSE WIND GUSTS WILL CONTINUE TO 35 40MPH. THERE YOU GO. HALF MILE VISIBILITY IN OMAHA, TEKAMAH HARLAN LESS THAN A MILE LINCOLN YORK I-80 CORRIDOR. REALLY ROUGH GOING RIGHT NOW, SO STILL MADE OF HEAVY SNOW AT TIMES THROUGH 9:00. MORE OF THAT PIVOTS INTO IOWA WITH THE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS LIKELY TOWARD DES MOINES. AFTERNOON SNOW WILL START TO TAPER OFF WEST TO EAST, BUT STILL BLOWING SNOW STILL GOING TO BE AN ISSUE AS WE CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING HOURS AND OVERNIGHT. COULD GET ANOTHER QUICK LITTLE BURST OF LIGHT SNOW, THIS ONE FAVORING SOUTH OF THE METRO, BUT MAY SEE A FEW SNOWFLAKES HERE EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. BUT THE MORE IMPORTANT AND MORE IMPACTFUL IS GOING TO BE THE EXTREME COLD. WE’VE GOT WIND CHILLS 20 TO 30 BELOW ZERO. SATURDAY 25 TO 40 BELOW ZERO. SUNDAY WIND CHILL WARNINGS IN PLACE THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. SO EXTREME COLD TALKING. WIND CHILLS AGAIN DOWN 30 TO 40 BELOW ZERO FOR MOST OF THAT TIME. COULD SETTLE FROSTBITE
