The other day @Noiv3rnasked about how he should perk out his gear to get into PvM.

While the RS wiki has a great article about optimal PvM perks, both for entry level and end game BiS (best in slot). What the wiki is lacking, is how to help people who want to begin to get into PvM and increase their DPS at a beginner tier.

Below will be some tips and suggestions for how to perk yourself out before you unlock Ancient invention and what wiki calls "entry level" which I would argue is more Mid Tier set-ups.

What are Perks?

Perks are incremental buffs you can add to your weapons, body armour, and leg armour. They provide a series of buffs that come in a tier system. The tier of the perk is denoted by a number after the name. The higher the number the higher the tier of the perk. Higher numbers often indicate either an increase in perk activation or a higher percent effect that the perk offers.

How do I get a perk?

one of the core gameplay loops of the invention skill is to disassemble items. When you disassemble an item, you have a chance at receiving any number of components. These components are used to roll for perks.

In order to roll for a perk, you will have to create an item called a Gizmo. Gizmos come in three varieties: Tool, Weapon, and Armour. The same component can offer different perks in different gizmos so be careful when you are rolling for a perk that you are using the correct gizmo.

My invention level is <70, I'm on a budget, but I want to PvM with @God Jamotduring Sunday Mass, What would be a good starting set up?

When it comes to weapons, the best bang for your buck will always be some combination of Precise and Equilibrium.

Precise is a perk that will increase your minimum hit of abilities and auto-attacks relative to your max hit. Precise is a perk that you can get between 1 and 6. Each tier will increase the percent of max hit by 1.5%. We are going to focus on rolling for a precise between 1 and 5. Keep in mind Precise 5 can be quite expensive.

Here is a good option if you are between 50 and 70 invention:

5x Precise Components

At 50 Invention you will have roughly a 10% chance of getting Precise 3. Your chance increases to just over 11% at 70 Invention.

Depending on what you disassemble, you can expect to pay less than 100k per attempt for this perk.

You can get Precise components from disassembling swords, arrows and spiky salvage.

If you have the GP, you can also roll the following for a guaranteed Precise 5,

5x Armadyl Components

Arma components can only be received from disassembling Armadyl items. Things like the armour and the armadyl crossbows. these can be quite pricey and costing somethere between just under 2m to over 5m a component.

However, if you camp Armadyl spiritual enemies, you will receive warpriest armour, which will give you one component for free. Check out the Player owned Dungeon forum for someone who might have Armadyl spiritual enemies you can camp.

Another really good perk for your weapons will be equilibrium. Equillibrium will increase minimum hit and decrease maximum hit. This will result in an overall net DPS increase when killing enemies.

Here is a good option if you are between 50 and 70 invention:

As above when rolling for Precise 3, you may also find you get equilibrium 2. Keep this gizmo.

Equillibrium 2 can be rolled at about a 17% chance.

If you happen to roll Precise and Equillibrium together. I would recommend ditching it unless it is the best gizmo you have after trying for both Precise 3 in one gizmo and Equilibrium 2 in another gizmo.

Armour allows a little more flexibility in its perk set up. I'll start off with the "must haves" and then share some situational and preferential perks. Armour perks will be much more expensive than weapon perks. But they are very very worth it.

"Must Haves"

Biting is a perk that has a 2% chance per tier to force an ability or auto-attack to be a critical hit. This is a very powerful perk and should not be overlooked.

4x Direct Components 1x Subtle Component

This set-up is weird. You actually have a higher chance of getting Biting 2 at level 50 than at level 70, with your chance peaking at level 35 with 25%. you can lower your invention level by hanging out outside the GWD1 entrance.

Impatient will have a 9% per tier to add 3% extra adrenaline when using basic abilities. This means you can get up to 11% adrenaline per basic ability.

5x Zamorak Components

This setup will provide you an 8% chance at level 50 invention. Bear in mind that this will also have a 40% chance of no effect. No effect will not consume a gizmo nor consume components, it just wastes your time.

Just like the Armadyl components for Precise. Zamorak components can be found by disassembling Zamorak god items. This can get painfully expensive, as even zamorak mjolnirs range from 400-600k each and only provide a 25% chance at the component. But, again, much like armadyl components you can farm spiritual enemies for zamorak warpriest, which is free albeit time consuming.

Scavenging is a really cool perk that will allow you to produce uncommon or rare components when killing an enemy. Each tier will give you not only a 1% increase but will also give +1 material. E.g. Scav 3 will provide a 3% chance for 3 uncommon or 3 rare materials.

5x Precious Components

At level 50 invention, scavenging 3 will be extremely rare (roughly a 1/15k chance) but you have over a 40% chance at scavening 2. Which will help in the long run still.
